Victimology Society of Serbia – VDS is an independent and non-profit civil society organization, founded in 1997 with the aim of bringing together as many humanistically oriented researchers and professionals as possible who are interested in working on the development of victimology (the science of victims) and improving the protection of victims of crime, human rights violations, war, and other forms of suffering in society, regardless of the gender, religious affiliation, political beliefs, or other characteristics of victims. The activities of the Victimology Society of Serbia are organized into two main groups of activities: VDS Info and Support to Victims and the VDS Centre for Research and Education, which includes a special programme dealing with truth and reconciliation.
The mission of the Victimology Society of Serbia is to advocate for the advancement of the rights of all victims and the creation of social conditions in which victims will be able to exercise their rights and meet their needs without difficulties, as well as to establish a social structure that will enable all those whose rights have been violated to recover and reintegrate into the community.
From the very beginning, the main objectives of the Victimology Society of Serbia were defined as follows: the scientific study of phenomena and circumstances that lead to human suffering, advocating for the development of victimology as a scientific discipline and raising social awareness of the problems faced by victims, developing and implementing practical measures aimed at providing assistance to victims, and advocating for the improvement of the legal status of victims.
